Our mission
Bringing technical and policy people together to understand and govern the risks of frontier AI.
As frontier AI systems become more capable, governance depends increasingly on technical facts and infrastructure: what systems can do, how much compute they use, and whether claims about them can be independently verified. Laws are hard to enforce if governments cannot measure capabilities or monitor deployed systems. Technical AI governance asks how that substrate can make governance more informed, precise and enforceable.

Advancing the research, talent and organisations for mitigating risks from frontier AI.
Based in Cambridge, ERA runs AI safety fellowships in three streams — Technical AI Governance, AI Governance, and Technical AI Safety — with the aim of building the talent base working on important AI safety and governance challenges, particularly focusing on technical governance as the first organisation to have this as a distinct track. Last summer ERA launched the first Technical Governance Forum and co-organised the Vegas AI Security Forum. ERA is also pioneering hardware security as a sub-field of AI safety, which feeds directly into the AI Verification focus area at this year’s TechGov Forum.
Our alumni now lead work in institutions such as the UK AISI and RAND. We have also collaborated with mentors and speakers from organisations including GovAI, Oxford Martin AIGI and IAPS.
